2019 introduces color

Carpet trends have definitely shifted away from the plush, wall-to-wall designs prevalent in the 1950’s through 1970’s. Area rugs are finding a renewed popularity with designs that are full of character—think everything from bold patterns to sustainable materials. We will help you make sense of how to decorate with carpet, a we look to the year ahead.

SEASONS

People are tending to use area rugs more as a design statement and in so doing are changing out rugs for each season. We are experiencing clients sending out their summer rugs for cleaning and storing and laying out their “winter” rugs.

ENTRYWAYS

Entryways have become popular spaces for carpet, because they set the tone for a home. Even though it's an entryway, colors like grays, beiges, and whites area popular choice. You would think a dark rug to hide the dirt would be more favorable, but top interior designers are saying clients want to make their entryway as luxurious as a living room or bedroom and are not shying away from lighter colors. Choose wool rugs as they are easier to clean and retain their shape better than other materials.

LARGER SIZES

It's not just 6 x 9 or 8 x 10 designs that people are choosing. People are paying more attention to the size of a rug and want to make sure it truly fits into their space. Since all rooms are not created equal, standard sizes just don’t fit and people are going custom. They have the opportunity to experience the luxury of a rug made specifically for that space, and they see it as an investment that they will have for a long time. If you choose a material such as wool, silk, wool/silk blend you will have that carpet for life if it is cleaned and cared for properly.

LOW-PILE HEIGHTS

Low-pile heights will still be popular in 2019. They are easier to clean, and even with moving doors and furniture, you don't see any marks.

JUTE

Wool and silk will still be popular in the high-end market, but Jute is a fiber that is getting its day in the sun. You can achieve many versatile looks with a jute rug and it's also a good fiber for people who have allergies. Though jute can be trickier to clean, so you should be careful who you select to clean your jute rugs.

MULTICOLORED DESIGNS

As we saw at the NYC Rug Show, blue, green, taupe, and burgundy will continue to appear in rug designs in 2019, but multicolored styles will also be a go-to choice.
